All teams in the ABE League are required to fill many of these jobs (timers, judges, etc) at both home and away meets. Failure to do so could disqualify our team from competing. Other jobs (snack stand, announcer, etc) help make the meet more fun and enjoyable for all.
Announcer (Home meets only)
Announces the start of each swim event including event number and lane assignments. During diving, announces the event and the diver's name and the scores for each dive. Makes other announcements to the crowd as needed.
Computer Operator (Home meets only)
Person must have prior training to volunteer for this position. Enters the swim times and the dive scores into the computer software. Keeps all slips submitted to the computer table in order and accurately entered into the system. Prints ribbon labels and gives to the Ribbons volunteer.
Diving Judge
Person must have prior training to volunteer for this position. Scores each dive using a scorecard visible to the announcer and the person entering the scores at the computer table.
Stroke & Turn Judge
Person must have prior training to volunteer for this position. Standing poolside, watches swimmers for the correct stroke and the correct touch and turn during each race. Reports incorrect strokes, kicks, or turns on a form that’s then given to the officials or the computer table.
Finish Judge
Standing at the end of the pool, observes the end of each race, then records on a sheet the order in which swimmers finished. Sheets are delivered to the computer table. No experience of training needed.
Timer
Standing at the end of a designated lane, uses a manual stopwatch or a Dolphin electronic stopwatch to time the swimmers from the moment the race is started to the touch at the finish, then records the time on a timing slip. Slips are collected by the runner.
Backup Timer
Standing poolside, starts a stopwatch with each heat, acting as a backup for the timers. In the case of a stopwatch error, timers will raise their hands, deliver the stopwatch to them and take their watch.
Runner (Home meets only)
Collects the lane sheets from timers and DQ cards from judges at the end of each event and delivers them to the computer table.
Lane Parent
Stands by the starting blocks and makes sure our team's swimmers are in the correct lane and are the ones listed on the meet sheet.
Ribbons (Home meets only)
Applies printed labels to the appropriate ribbons and separates them by team. Requires staying until after the meet ends for a few minutes. The final labels are printed after the last event.
Snack Stand (Home meets only)
Helps setting up and preparing the stand. Helps with cleaning up and closing the stand. During the meet, sell and serve food, keep the area clean, and ensure things run smoothly.
Thanks again for helping! The meets run smoothly and are fun for all when scheduled volunteers show up for their assigned jobs. If for any reason you cannot meet your commitment, please find a replacement or contact us.
